WAUWATOSA, Wis. - Sophomore midfielder Chelsey Henderson recorded a hat trick as the Villanova women's lacrosse team (8-7, 3-3 BIG EAST) defeated Marquette (5-10, 1-5) 10-9 Saturday afternoon.
Henderson started the scoring with a free position goal at 22:44. Sophomore attack Meghan Breen increased the Wildcats' lead with a fast-break goal at 21:21.
After a Golden Eagles goal, junior attack Jessica Mucci scored at 15:25. Claire Costanza scored two goals as Marquette tied the game at three.
Sophomore midfielder Shannon Galvin scored at 10:20, but the Golden Eagles tied the game at 8:27.
Henderson, Breen, sophomore midfielder Tierney Griff and Mucci all scored in the last 7:53 of the first half as the Wildcats took an 8-4 lead.
Villanova scored two more unanswered goals after the break. Sophomore attack Kelsey Denihan and Henderson each scored on free position shots at 27:02 and 26:05, respectively.
The Golden Eagles tallied five consecutive goals from 25:42 to 12:10 as they closed the scoring gap to one. Sophomore goalkeeper Jaclyn Fraum made back-to-back saves in the 10th minute and the Wildcat defense held Marquette off the board as Villanova took the 10-9 win.
Marquette outshot Villanova, 19-16, but the Wildcats held an 18-15 advantage in ground balls. The Golden Eagles took 11 of 21 draw controls.
Fraum made three saves and recorded four ground balls and a caused turnover in the game.
The Wildcats finish the regular season and will look to clinch a spot in the BIG EAST Championship next Saturday against Connecticut (9-6, 4-2) at 1 p.m. in Storrs, Conn.
