Second Half Surge Powers 'Cats Past LIU 11-4
April 17, 2007 VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova scored seven unanswered goals to open the second half to break open a close game en route to an 11-4 triumph over Long Island University on a chilly evening at Villanova Stadium. The Wildcats improved to 6-6 overall with their second straight home win while the Blackbirds dropped to 5-10 on the campaign. Sophomore Erica Rybinski opened the scoring off an assist from Shannon Sullivan to give the `Cats a 1-0 edge at 26:51. A Villanova misplay in its own end allowed LIU to knot matters at one at 24:13 before a Sullivan goal gave the Wildcats the lead back at 19:11. A free position goal by LIU's Allison Funk knotted the contest at two and a Christie Wienckowski goal at 9:00 gave the Blackbirds a 3-2 advantage with just over eighrt minutes left in the stanza. Villanova got two more goals from Rybinski to gain a 4-3 edge at intermission. The second half belonged to the `Cats. Goals from Taryn McKenna, Christina Bahrs and Stevie McFadden in the first four minutes of the period gave the Wildcats a cushion they would not relinquish. Bahrs and Rybinski each added a goal apiece and Sullivan added two more while LIU could manage only a Amy Rizzo score in the second half. Sullivan ended the evening with three goals and three assists while Rybinski added four goals for Villanova. Senior Jessica Brozena got the win in net. The Wildcats complete the home portion of their schedule on Thursday against Lafayette at Villanova Stadium. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
