VILLANOVA, Pa. -Junior Taryn McKenna scored four goals, including three in the first half, and added an assist to help spark Villanova (4-8) to a victory over La Salle (1-12) in a women's lacrosse contest played on a warm spring night at Villanova Stadium.
McKenna helped the Wildcats gain an early advantage when she converted a feed from junior Katie Stone into a goal, beating Explorer goalie Ellen Axelsen at the 26:43 mark of the first half. Stone scored an unassisted goal at 19:21 to give VU a 2-0 lead and then McKenna added her second goal of the night at 13:01 to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.
La Salle responded with three goals of its own off the sticks of Erika Matthews, Stefany McKee and Kelly Heiss to tie the contest with 8:19 to go in the first half.
VU, though, picked up scores from Taylor Lucy and McKenna before halftime to build a 5-3 edge at intermission.
Three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half gave VU a comfortable 8-3 margin. Freshman Rachel Lasda, McKenna, and Lucy accounted for those goals.
After a score by Emily Bonczek cut the lead to 8-4 with 18:37 left, the `Cats got another goal from Lasda and one from Rachael Ponge to build a 10-4 advantage. Senior Nikki Bell and freshman Nora Wallace rounded out the goal scoring for Villanova. Next up for Villanova is a clash Saturday at Lafayette at 1:00 p.m.
