EASTON, Pa. - The Villanova women's lacrosse team (6-4) finished its nonconference slate with an 8-6 win over Lafayette (4-9) Wednesday night.
Sophomore midfielder Shannon Galvin put the Wildcats up 31 seconds into the game with an unassisted goal. Sophomore attack Meghan Breen increased the Villanova lead three minutes later with a backdoor tally from Jessica Mucci.
The Leopards go on the board at 24:09 on a free position shot. Sophomore midfielder Chelsey Henderson put the Wildcats up 3-1 at 20:29 with an unassisted goal.
Lafayette scored the next two goals to tie the game. Junior midfielder Hannah Goforth got the ball from Mucci and notched a goal at 13:20.
Two goals from the Leopards put them ahead for the first time in the game. Freshman back Mariah Salerno tied the game at five with 51 seconds left in the first to go into halftime.
Lafayette took the lead back one more time two minutes into the second. The Wildcat defense and sophomore goalkeeper Jaclyn Fraum shut the Leopard offense down for the rest of the game, not allowing seven shots or goals on four free position shots.
Freshman midfielder Becca Hetrick scored at 19:18 to tie the game at six, and sophomore attack Kelsey Denihan tallied the game-winner at 13:08. Galvin added her second goal of the game at 4:10 as the Wildcats took the game, 8-6.
Fraum made eight saves in the game. Henderson picked up three ground balls.
Villanova and Lafayette were evenly matched in the game, with each team taking 19 shots and picking up 10 ground balls. Lafayette held a 10-6 advantage in draw controls.
The Leopards were 3-of-8 on free position shots while the Wildcats were 0-of-2.
Villanova finished nonconference play with a 5-4 record.
The Wildcats travel to crosstown rival Temple on Saturday at 1 p.m. to continue BIG EAST play.
