Six Straight Goals to Open Game Help 'Cats Down LIU 15-7
March 30, 2008 Brooklyn, N.Y. - The Long Island University women's lacrosse team fell behind by six goals early on and was unable to recover as it fell to Villanova, 15-7, on Sunday afternoon at LIU Field. Junior Taryn McKenna paced the Wildcats offensive attack with six goals.
Villanova (3-6) jumped out to a 6-0 lead at the 12:28 mark of the first period. Taryn McKenna led the early charge with three goals for the Wildcats. The Blackbirds managed to crack the scoring column at the 12:00 point when freshman Sarah James (Springfield, Pa.) converted a free position shot and freshman Annie Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) added a free position goal of her own 32 seconds later to get LIU within 6-2, but that was as close as the Blackbirds could get.
The Wildcats ran off the next three goals to push their lead to 9-2, before Funk scored her first of the day with 0:15 left in the period to make it 9-3 at halftime.
McKenna opened the second period scoring for Villanova at the 21:42 mark, igniting a three-goal run for the visitors to push the lead to 12-3. The Blackbirds got a goal back when Funk took a pass from sophomore Christie Wienckowski (Newton Square, Pa.) with 16:37 to play.
Following another VU goal, Kalata and freshman Sara LaNoir (Queensbury, N.Y.) scored consecutive goals for LIU to cut the deficit to 13-6 with 9:52 to play. Funk scored the final Blackbirds goal sandwiched between a pair of Wildcats tallies with 0:15 to play.
Freshman Kimberly Bostwick (East Northport, N.Y.) made eight saves for LIU. LaNoir added four ground balls and two caused turnovers, while freshman Desiree Dabrowski (Orangeville, Ontario) picked up four ground balls as well.
Villanova held a 31-22 advantage in shots, while McKenna finished the day with six goals. Maggie Langan made seven saves in the win for the Wildcats.
