SOUTH BEND, Ind. - No. 7 Notre Dame took a four goal lead to begin the game and never trailed as Villanova fell to the Fighting Irish 14-2 on Sunday afternoon in South Bend, Ind.
Sophomore Jackie Froccaro (Sands Point, N.Y.) and freshman Chelsey Henderson (West Long Branch, N.J.) tallied the Wildcat scores for the day as Villanova dropped their first BIG EAST contest of the season.
With the loss, Villanova fell to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference while seventh-ranked Notre Dame improved to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST.
In a defensive minded first half, Villanova limited ND to just four shots while the Wildcats and Irish were deadlocked with six ground balls and three draw controls apiece after the first 30 minutes of action. After four straight Notre Dame scores, Froccaro put the Wildcats on the board with 1:08 remaining in the first half after connecting on a free position shot to cut the deficit at 4-1 going into intermission.
Following halftime, Notre Dame posted three quick goals within 6:24 to start the stanza before senior Annie Fallon (Shrewsbury, N.J.) found an open Henderson with 22:41 on the clock to post the second Villanova score of the afternoon and close the gap at 7-2 in favor of the home team.
Notre Dame closed out the contest with seven straight goals led by a hat trick from Catilin Gargan to solidify the victory.
Henderson led Villanova with six ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers in addition to a goal while Amanda Hirschfeld (Timonium, Md.) and Dani Wiedmeier (Westlake, Ohio) combined for 15 saves in the defeat.
The Wildcats will have 12 days rest before taking on No. 5 Syracuse on Friday, April 5th. Game time is slated for 4 p.m. in Villanova Stadium.
