Women's Lacrosse Falls in Home Opener
March 18, 1999
VILLANOVA, Pa. - A series of Villanova rallies could not overcome a balanced Colgate attack as the Red Raiders edged the Wildcats 10-8 in a tight contest played on a windy afternoon at Villanova Stadium. Villanova senior Meghan Doyle followed up her strong opening game performance at Drexel (eight goals) with three goals and one assist to lead the Wildcats. Sophomore Liz Kenny also scored three goals for VU. Freshmen Cecily Pierce and Sarah DePeters rounded out the Villanova scoring. Vignolo staked Colgate to a 1-0 lead just 28 seconds into the first half. Villanova's Pierce responded immediately. The teams traded goals until Colgate took a 4-3 lead at 18:44 of the first half on a Kate Manzella feed to Currier. After a Colgate score, a Doyle goal kept the deficit at one for the ?Cats as the horn for halftime sounded. Another quick score, this one less than a minute into the second half, gave Colgate a 6-4 advantage. VU fought back to knot the score at six midway through the second half as Kenny netted her second goal. But a Neas score with 14:58 remaining in the second stanza put the Red Raiders ahead for good. The Wildcats defeat, their first in Patriot League action, leaves them with a 1-1 overall record in 1999. Villanova returns to game action this weekend at Duquesne. Villanova meets Davidson on Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. start and then faces host Duquesne on Sunday in a noon start.
