DAVIDSON, N.C. - Powered by freshman midfielder Becca Hetrick's four-goal performance, the Villanova women's lacrosse team (4-3) defeated Davidson (1-5), 8-6, Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats went down 1-0 at 26:07 before junior attack Jessica Mucci scored a Shannon Galvin assisted goal at 23:28. Galvin scored an unassisted goal less than two minutes later as Villanova took the lead. Two more Davidson goals in the last 20 minutes of the first half put the home Wildcats up 3-2 going into the break.
Villanova scored three goals on just over two minutes to start the scoring in the second half. Hetrick notched the first two, one on a free position and the other assisted by Galvin, before the two switched places and Galvin scored a Hetrick-assisted goal. The Wildcats held a 5-3 advantage and wouldn't relinquish the lead for the rest of the game.
Davidson scored twice more before Villanova went on another three-goal streak in the last 10 minutes of the game. Sophomore midfielder Chelsey Henderson tallied on a free position shot before Hetrick scored her last two goals 63 seconds apart, assisted by Galvin and senior attack Katie Collopy.
At 1:47, Davidson scored one more goal, but Villanova took the 8-6 game. Hetrick (4G, 1A) and Galvin (2G, 3A) each finished with five points.
Sophomore Jaclyn Fraum played all 60 minutes in net, making two saves in the game.
The Wildcats held a 15-13 advantage in shots while Davidson held the lead in ground balls, 19-17. Galvin and Henderson each recorded four ground balls in the game.
Villanova was 2-for-3 on free position shots and won seven of 16 draw controls. Henderson earned three draw controls to lead the team.
The Wildcats return home on Sunday, March 23 to host No. 7/6 Notre Dame at noon at Villanova Stadium.
