BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Senior Sarah Berger put Villanova ahead with an early goal and the Wildcats went on to a 21-8 victory over the LIU Blackbirds in a women's lacrosse contest played on a sunny afternoon here. Villanova improved to 4-0, its best start in this decade, while LIU dropped to 0-3.
Berger's goal opened the scoring 1:12 into the contest and was followed quickly by a goal from junior Carly Miller. After LIU got on the scoreboard with a goal of its own off the stick of Annie Kalata, VU responded with goals from freshman Maria Bowman and sophomore Tricia Shanagan, who was assisted by Anne Fallon. The count was 4-1. Then came goals from sophomore Justine Donodeo and seniors Erica Rybinski and Samantha McKillip to extend the advantage to 7-1 with 18:38 to go in the first half.
After LIU scored to make it 7-2, the `Cats got goals from Rachel Lasda and Donodeo to make it 9-2. Bowman and Miller would score before halftime and Villanova held an 11-4 lead at halftime.
Any thoughts of an LIU comeback were halted when Donodeo scored her 18th goal of the season one minute into the second half. Villanova then pulled away for the 21-8 victory.
Donodeo scored four goals to push her season total to 19 while Rybinski tallied three. Thirteen different Wildcats scored a point in this contest.
Villanova returns to action on Wednesday when it meets Lafayette on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.).
