PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Despite taking the early 2-0 lead on a cold and windy March afternoon in Philadelphia, Pa., the Villanova Wildcats dropped a midweek matchup to No. 18 Drexel, 14-10, on Wednesday at Vidas Field.
Senior Maria Bowman (Ft. Belvoir, Va.) led Villanova with a five point performance via three goals and two assists while freshman Chelsey Henderson (West Long Branch, N.J.) posted a hat trick and an assist for four points. With the loss, the Wildcats fell to 1-3 on the young season while Drexel improved to 5-0.
After falling behind 2-0 just six minutes into the contest, the Dragons rallied and outscored the Wildcats by a 7-3 margin in the first 30 minutes of play. Sophomores Elise Bendinelli (West Chester, Pa.) and Hannah Goforth (Chester Springs, Pa.) notched the Wildcat scores with assists from Bowman and Tierney Griff (Summit, N.J.), respectively, to begin the contest.
Following 14 minutes of scoreless action, Bowman found an open Henderson to break the scoring drought and cut the Dragon lead down to 4-3 at the 9:49 mark, but the Dragons responded with another scoring run from Alyse Maiden, Jessica Rudloff and Kelli Joran to increase the lead at 7-3 at intermission.
Bowman and Henderson provided the Wildcats with much of their lifeblood in the second half and combined for five goals and one assist in the stanza. With 8:34 remaining in the game, Bowman began the Wildcat rally as Henderson and sophomore Jessica Mucci (Severna Park, Md.) tallied scores in the final minutes of action but it wouldn't be enough to outpace Drexel's seven second half goals.
Senior goalkeeper Amanda Hirschfeld (Timonium, Md.) posted seven saves in the loss while Drexel's Teresha Bradley and Amanda Santandrea combined for two saves for the victory.
The Wildcats will be back in action when they return home to Villanova Stadium this Saturday, March 9th to face Mt. St. Mary's. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
