Wildcats Fall at Iona 15-10

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Villanova Wildcats (1-1 overall) built an early 4-1 lead in their first road battle of the season but saw Iona rally to post a 15-10 victory in a women's lacrosse contest staged here today.
Senior Taryn McKenna gave the `Cats an early edge with a goal off a free position shot at 27:52 and junior Erica Rybinski followed with an unassisted goal to make it 2-0 less than two minutes later. After the Gaels got on the board, VU picked up goals from sophomore Carly Miller and another from McKenna to take a 4-1 lead with 18:51 to go in the first half.
However, Iona responded by scoring five straight goals, three of them by Casey Scully, to make it 6-4 before McKenna scored again to narrow the gap to 6-5 at halftime.
The Gaels picked up four more goals, including another pair from Scully, in the first 8:01 of the second half to expand their advantage to 10-5. Senior Taylor Lucy got one back for the Wildcats on a free position shot at 21:22.
Samantha McKillip pulled the `Cats to within four goals at 12-8 with her goal on a free position shot with 9:42 remaining in regulation. But Jillian Beck and Lisa Baron answered with goals for the Gaels to make it 14-8. Katie Stone and Erica Rybinski scored goals for Villanova in the final 4:03 while Emily Taddei delivered another one for the Gaels to make the final 15-10. McKenna ended the afternoon with three goals while Rybinski scored two and added an assist.
Sophomore Maggie Langan went the distance in net for the Wildcats, making eight saves. Iona held a 40-29 edge in shots for the afternoon.
Next up for Villanova is a date on March 6 when it visits Louisville.
