Villanova, Pa. - Villanova (1-0) opened their 2009 season at Villanova Stadium against Central Connecticut State Sunday. Led by senior Taryn McKenna's (Dix Hills, N.Y.) five goals and two assists, the Wildcats won 13-5.
The Wildcats started off the game with three unanswered goals. Senior Taylor Lucy (Ocean View, Del.), sophomore Carly Miller (Rye, N.Y.), and McKenna each scored to put Villanova up 3-0 with less than 19 minutes remaining in the first half.
After a goal from Central Connecticut, Villanova answered with four goals in a row. Senior Katie Stone (Garden City, N.Y.) recorded two goals and finished with three on the day. McKenna and Miller each had another to put the Wildcats up 7-2 at the half.
Villanova continued their offensive success entering the second half with two goals. Stone and McKenna each had their third of the day to boost their lead to 9-2.
After Central Connecticut's Stephanie John scored her second goal of the day, Villanova responded with three in a row. Lucy, Miller and McKenna put the game out of reach putting the score at 12-3 with 18:55 remaining in the game.
McKenna who led the Wildcats in 2008 with 35 goals, tallied her fifth goal of the day with 0:13 seconds left to make the final score 13-5.
Goalkeeper Maggie Langan (Potomac, Md.) had a great performance in the net for Villanova recording nine saves and allowing only five goals in the win.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday February 28th when they travel to Iona.
