NEWARK, Del. - The Villanova women's lacrosse team (1-1) fell short in an 11-7 contest at Delaware on Wednesday afternoon.
The Blue Hens got on the board first with three unanswered goals to open the first half. Freshman Jackie Froccaro scored Villanova's first goal at the 14:43 mark as junior Maria Bowman gave the assist. Trailing 5-2, Froccaro scored another goal for the Wildcats, but Delaware's attack stayed strong scoring two additional goals.
With one minute remaining in the first half senior Justine Donodeo scored on a free position shot and then gave an assist to Bowman who scored with nine seconds left on the clock, which cut the Blue Hens' lead to 7-4 heading into halftime.
Donodeo scored at the 13:17 mark cutting the lead to 10-7, but Delaware answered and scored at 11:13. Neither team scored again as the Blue Hens' earned an 11-7 victory.
Donodeo tallied three points with two goals and one assist, while Froccaro also posted two points on two goals. She also had one ground ball and one draw control. Bowman recorded two points with one goal, one assist, two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Junior Shawna Giust had a strong defensive game with three round balls, three draw controls and four caused turnovers.
The Wildcats will host Princeton in their homeopener on Saturday afternoon. The game is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m.
