VILLANOVA, Pa.— Wildcats field hockey is gearing up for a trip to Philadelphia, Pa. where they will meet in a City-6 clash with the Temple Owls on Friday. After Temple, Villanova will return home to host Monmouth N.J. on Alumni Day. Friday is tabbed for a 6 p.m. start while Sunday is set to begin at 12 p.m.
Villanova kicked off last weekend hosting the No. 1 ranked UConn Huskies at home. The Wildcats were unable to contain a powerful offense for most of the match. Next up was a trip to Easton, Pa. to take on Lafayette in an early afternoon contest. Lydia Sydnor led the Wildcats as she scored the lone goal of the contest en route of the Jaguars, 1-0. Sydnor leads the squad with six goals and 12 points. As a team, Villanova has notched 88 penalty corners and 100 saves on the season.
The Temple Owls are coming off a 1-1 weekend as they host the Wildcats at home on Friday. Last Friday, they took on BIG EAST foe Old Dominion on the road. After a strong effort the Owls were blanked by BIG EAST opponent, 4-0. Temple hosted UC Davis on Sunday where they were able to capture a win in an overtime thriller, 3-2. The game winner came from their senior defenseman who has tallied three goals, one assist, and seven points on the season. The Owls are averaging 1.5 goals per game, have notched 49 penalty corners with .584 shot on goal percentage. Last season when these two teams met, the Wildcats just edged Temple, 3-2 at home.
Monmouth comes to town looking for their fourth road win of the season. Last weekend, they hosted Sacred Heart on Friday where they posted a shutout, 4-0. Next, they traveled to other MAAC member Fairfield. The Hawks dropped the match, 3-1. Leading the Hawks is x Julie Laszlo who has notched four goals, 16 assists, and 24 points so far this season. As a squad, they average four goals per game, 19.4 shots per game, and has allowed 14 goals off penalty corners. Last time the teams clashed in 2015, Villanova lost the battle, 3-1 at Monmouth.
Alumni Day against Monmouth:
Villanova Field Hockey will be welcoming back alumni for their game against Monmouth on Oct. 15. The team will host a pregame tailgate as part of the festivities. At halftime, members of the 1990 BIG EAST Conference Championship and 2005 BIG EAST Regular Season Championship teams will be honored.
