VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova field hockey team opens the 2013 season tomorrow against Sacred Heart at 2 p.m. The Wildcats and Pioneers will face off in Villanova, Pa.
This is the Wildcats' first matchup with the Pioneers in program history.
The Wildcats are coming off a 7-12 season in 2012, which saw the team narrowly missing the postseason. The team's top offensive line is returning after a dominant 2012 campaign. Junior forward Leah High led the Wildcats in goals (12) and points (28) last year. Sophomore forward Kayla Kenney finished as the team leader in assists (9) while junior forward Jessica Swoboda notched 17 points.
Returning goalkeeper Alex Diekmann made 112 saves and notched a 3.62 GAA in 2012, earning her a place on the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Villanova won a scrimmage against La Salle, 2-0, last Saturday.
Scouting the Pioneers
Sacred Heart opens its season Friday against the Towson Tigers. The Pioneers were picked to finish fifth in the MAAC Preseason Poll in the inaugural season of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference field hockey.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mary Altepeter was named to the preseason All-MAAC team. Sacred Heart finished the 2012 season with a 6-11 record, including a 4-6 record on the road, in the team's last season in the Northeastern Conference. The Pioneers now compete in the MAAC.
The Pioneers are returning top scorers Liz Bergman and Sarah Bergman. Liz Bergman recorded 12 points (5G, 2A) as a redshirt freshman while Sarah Bergman notched 10 points (3G, 4A) as a sophomore. Sarah Bergman was named the All-NEC Second Team last season.
