Villanova, Pa. – Head coach Joanie Milhous and the Villanova field hockey team finalized its schedule for the 2014 season. The fall slate features 18 games including 12 in the state of Pennsylvania, 11 against teams faced last season, nine at Villanova Stadium and four against those that made the 2013 NCAA Championship. In addition, the Wildcats will be facing five BIG EAST foes in the form of 2013 NCAA Division I Champion Connecticut, Georgetown, Old Dominion, Providence and Temple.
Villanova is three years removed from its most recent BIG EAST postseason berth (2011), having made the conference championship seven times in the last 13 years (2001-present).
The Wildcats will scrimmage Temple in an exhibition event on Saturday, August 23 before opening its season on the road in Fairfield, Conn. when Villanova takes on Sacred Heart on Friday, August 29 at 7 p.m. Villanova opens its season up against Sacred Heart for the second-straight year.
Villanova hosts its first home game at Villanova Stadium on Monday, September 1 (Labor Day) against Missouri State at noon. The Wildcats have only faced the MSU Bears once before, back in 2008 with Villanova winning, 3-1.
The Wildcats will then play four matches on the road against Fairfield, Siena, La Salle and Columbia. Villanova will take on Fairfield and Siena on Friday, September 5 and Sunday, September 7, respectively, before returning to the Philadelphia area to face La Salle for a mid-week matchup on Wednesday, September 10. The Wildcats close out the four-game road stretch at Columbia in New York on Saturday, September 13. It marks the squad’s first four-game road sequence since the 2011 season.
Villanova then returns home for games on Friday, September 19 and Sunday, September 21. The Wildcats first play Delaware on Friday night at 7 p.m. before squaring off against Saint Joseph’s in a noon matinee on Sunday. Villanova owns the all-time series lead over the SJU Hawks, 21-18-1.
After a break for a week, the squad closes out the month of September in Lawrence Township, N.J. in a matchup against Rider at noon on Sunday, September 28, marking the ninth game and midpoint of the season.
Villanova’s first BIG EAST matchup comes against Old Dominion on Friday, October 3 followed by a home contest against Monmouth at 5:30 p.m. the subsequent Sunday.
The Wildcats then travel a short distance over to Temple University to face the Owls on Friday, October 10 in the squad’s second conference matchup. The final road match of the season comes against Saint Francis in Loretto, Pa. the following Sunday, October 12.
Villanova concludes its season with four out of the final five games at home including three against BIG EAST opponents. The team also plays four home events at Villanova Stadium in the month of October. The last time the Wildcats had four home matches in October came back in 2007 when the squad hosted five matchups.
Georgetown comes to town on Friday, October 17 before the Wildcats face the 2013 NCAA Division I National Championship team, Connecticut, the following Friday, October 24. Villanova leads the Georgetown series, 21-3 all-time, while the Huskies and UConn Head Coach Nancy Stevens return 16 student-athletes from its championship squad.
Villanova hosts Philadelphia local Penn in the only Tuesday game of the 2014 season on October 28 at 6 p.m.
The Wildcats final home and BIG EAST game comes against Providence on Saturday, November 1 followed by a regular-season finale against Quinnipiac in a neutral site event at noon on Sunday, November 2 (venue still yet to be determined).
Providence College will host the BIG EAST Championship on November 6-9.
The Wildcats are coming off a 4-13 record for the 2013 season. Villanova had 12 student-athletes selected to the 2013 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad including eight returning for the 2014 fall slate. The squad also earned the NFHCA Academic Team Award, presented to programs with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.
