VILLANOVA, PA.--- Two Villanova student athletes were named to the Verizon Academic All-America Women's At-Large District 2 Team. Brooke Bergmann (Fallsington, Pa.), a two-time captain of the Wildcat field hockey team, and Sarah DePeters (Rochester, N.Y.), a captain of the 2002 women's lacrosse team, each received Second Team honors.

Bergmann, a unanimous selection to the 2001 All-Big East First Team, helped Villanova reach the finals of the Big East Championship game and finished the year with 23 points (seven goals, nine assists). Bergmann was a 2001 STX/NFHCA Division I Regional All-American for her efforts on the field and also received NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad honors in addition the Verizon academic award for her efforts in the classroom.

DePeters, a Second Team All-Patriot League selection, led the Wildcats with 67 groundballs and finished second on the team with 42 points (32 goals, nine assists) as Villanova received its second consecutive Patriot League post-season tournament bid. DePeters finished her career with 135 points on 113 goals and 22 assists. It marks the second time in her career that DePeters has received the Second Team Verizon Academic honor.

This year marks the 50th year of the Academic All-America® program, as the inaugural team was announced on December 6, 1952. Since that time, more than 12,000 students have been named Academic All-America team members at colleges and universities at all levels for every recognized NCAA sport. The program's popularity resulted in a significant expansion for the current academic year, as 816 student-athletes - a 19 percent increase over the previous highest number - will be selected to 12 different Academic All-America teams during the 2001-02 academic season.
