CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - On Sunday, Nov. 4, in the championship game of the 2001 Big East Championships, No. 1 seed Syracuse defeated the Villanova Wildcats, 1-0. The Orangewomen earn the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. Villanova concludes the season as the 2001 Big East Championship runner-up with a 12-8 record.

Villanova dominated play in the first half outshooting Syracuse by a margin of 6-0, forcing four penalty corners. The Wildcats were unable to capitalize on the offensive end as the Orangewomen defense held Villanova scoreless. Syracuse goalkeeper, Audrey Latsko made six of her four saves in the first half.

The wave of momentum shifted in the second half to Syracuse's advantage as they forced seven penalty corners, one of which resulted in the only goal of the afternoon. The Orangewomen tallied the game-winning goal at the 18:25 mark when senior Michelle Aronowicz, the game's Most Valuable Player, tipped a shot into the back of the cage. Junior Michelle Marks was credited with the assist.

Villanova goalkeeper Meghan Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) finished with four saves, all in the second half.
