NEWARK, Del. - Junior back Maddy Harding scored her team-leading eighth goal as the Villanova field hockey team (4-13, 1-6 BIG EAST) fell, 6-1, to No. 19 Delaware (14-4, 6-0 CAA) Sunday afternoon.

Harding's goal came off a Jessica Swoboda corner at 16:42. Junior forward Leah High stopped the ball and Harding's shot went above the diving goalkeeper to the top of the cage.

The Wildcats and Blue Hens kept the ball in the midfield to start the game. Delaware pushed to get the ball in the Wildcat zone, but Villanova pressed the Blue Hens to keep it out of the circle.

Delaware scored the first goal of the game on an unassisted tip-in by Kasey Prettyman at 14:48. The Blue Hens scored again just 25 seconds later with a Michaela Patzner goal.

Harding's goal cut the lead to 2-1, but Clare O'Malley added another Blue Hen goal with 56 seconds left in the first half.

The Blue Hens kept the ball in the offensive zone for the majority of the second half, recording four corners and 12 shots.

Prettyman scored her second goal of the game with a shot from the left side of the cage off a Patzner pass. Toni Popinko added a fifth goal for the Blue Hens off a corner as her shot rolled over a diving Diekmann and into the cage.

Allie Mikelson scored the last goal of the game at 51:29 with a tip-in near the net. Junior back Abigail Freitag played great defensively, breaking up numerous Blue Hen passes throughout the game to stall the Delaware offense.

Senior goalkeeper Alex Diekmann made six saves in the contest and is 3-11 on the season.

Harding leads the team in goals (8) and points (19) for the year. Swoboda is first in helpers with eight assists.
