NEW YORK, N.Y. - Villanova (8-10, 3-3) wrapped up it's regular season schedule this afternoon in New York with a 1-0 victory over Columbia (8-8) after a tough defeat to Syracuse on Friday. The shutout victory was the second of the season for the Wildcats as they shut out the Georgetown Hoyas 2-0, less than two weeks ago.
The first half did not see a lot of action toward either goal, but Villanova controlled much of the possession. Villanova's defense was stout again as it has been several times throughout the season and the great defense would carry over after the break.
Villanova allowed just two shots on goal in the first half and just one more in the second half as senior goalie Megan Goelz (Yardley, Pa.) stopped all three shots she faced to allow the Wildcats a chance to take the lead.
Villanova finally took advantage of the great defensive play in the 43rd minute when freshman Maddy Harding (Warrington, Pa.) let one fly and it found the back of the net for a 1-0 Wildcat lead. It was the freshman's second goal of the season.
From there, the Villanova defense continued to dominate the game as the Wildcats held on to their one goal lead for the shutout victory.
It's the second of the season and Goelz eighth career shutout in her final regular season game of her career.
Villanova will now use the next week to prepare for the BIG EAST tournament that gets underway on Friday. They will play the No. 2 seed Syracuse Orange at 3 p.m. on Friday and should they win, they will play for the BIG EAST title on Sunday.
