Philadelphia, Pa. - The Wildcats (12-6, 2-3 Big East) won their first overtime contest of the season Wednesday as the beat Philadelphia rival Saint Joseph's 3-2. Sophomore Lauren Wuzzardo (Bridgeton, N.J.) had two goals and an assist for Villanova, including the game tying goal and the winning goal.
Down 2-0 with less than 14 minutes remaining, Junior Jenn Nazarethian (Medford, N.J.) put the Wildcats on the board. With a long pass from Wuzzardo, Nazarethian was able to deflect the ball into the cage to make the score 2-1. The goal was Nazarethian's third of the season.
To tie the game, Wuzzardo had her first goal of the game in the contest in the 62nd minute. With assists from senior Sam Coveleski (Lewes, Del.) and junior Emily Donaldson (Glassboro, N.J.), Wuzzardo was able to score off a penalty corner to send the game to overtime.
Less than a minute into overtime, the Wildcats were able to score the go ahead goal for the win. On a two one none breakaway, Nazarethian had an assist on Wuzzardo's second goal, her seventh of the year, for the win.
The Wildcats third come from behind win this season came after the Hawks were up 2-0. They had goals from Jen Wrublesky at the 25:32 mark and Krista Bordogna in the 42nd minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maura McCormick (Forty Fort, Pa.) played 29:30 minutes in the cage allowing one goal and recording two saves. Her goals against average is now 1.46 and 89 saves on the season. Freshman Megan Goelz (Yardley, Pa.) spent 40:57 minutes in the goal allowing one goal with two saves. She has now recorded 70:23 minutes with four saves and a goal against average of 0.99.
The Wildcats wrap up their regular season on Saturday November 1st at home aginast Connecticut. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
