WASHINGTON, D.C-- The Villanova field hockey team traveled to Georgetown on Friday afternoon for their final game of the 2017 season. The Wildcats defeated Georgetown, 5-3.
In the first half, Villanova got off to a quick start as they netted their first goal of the game in the sixth minute of action. Emma McLaughlin found senior teammate Francesca Bello as she captured her eighth goal of the season. The Wildcats defense kept the pressure as they faced three back-to-back Hoyas penalty corners. Villanova earned their first penalty corner as the halfway mark of the first period approached. On that penalty corner Bello saw her shot fall as she helped the squad go up 2-0. Next, Megan Vermeil scored the next goal for Villanova, but Georgetown earned a goal in the closing minute of the half. The score was 3-1 going into halftime.
For the majority of the second half it was a defensive battle as Villanova tried to defend the lead. In the final 10 minutes of the game, Emma McLaughlin earned her first goal of the season putting the team up 4-1. Two late goals in the closing minutes of the fame put Georgetown within one but freshman Lexi DiGennaro netted an insurance goal. The Wildcats closed out the 2017 season with a victory over the Hoyas, 5-3.
