COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman standout Lauren Wuzzardo notched the lone goal for the Wildcats as Villanova dropped their final road match of the season to No. 2 Maryland 5-1 at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on a rainy Friday night in College Park. Villanova slides to 10-7 with one game left in the season, while Maryland climbs to 17-1 heading into postseason play.
The Wildcats fell behind in the opening minutes when Maryland's Janneke van Leeuwen scored the first of her two goals for the game off a well-executed penalty corner. Three minutes later, Wuzzardo retaliated and managed to knot the game at 1-1 as she fired an unassisted shot from the top of the circle.
However, the Terps quickly reclaimed the lead in the 15th minute as van Leeuwen netted her second goal of the game, flipping the ball past Villanova goalkeeper Maura McCormick making the score 2-1 until the start of the second half.
Maryland displayed its offensive prowess throughout the duration of the second half as the Terps scored three-unanswered goals en route to the 5-1 victory. Ellen Ott registered two goals, while teammate Susie Rowe slapped in a shot to place the game well out of reach for the Wildcats.
Villanova will face its final opponent of the season, as well as honor the 2007 senior class, on Sunday, Oct. 28, as they host the Robert Morris Colonials at 1 p.m. at Villanova Stadium.
