CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.--The Villanova Field Hockey team celebrated Senior Day on Sunday afternoon as they hosted Rider. The game winning goal in overtime came from Megan Vermeil as the Wildcats captured a win for its seniors, 3-2.
As the first half got underway, the offensive side of the ball was off to a strong start as the Wildcats received great looks at goal but couldn't get anything to fall. It was the Broncs who struck first as they scored in the first ten minutes of play. With Villanova looking for the equalizer, they earned a corner in the 33rd minute of play which saw a shot by Allison Sayia go past the goalie. This brought the score to one a piece as the first half came to an end. The Wildcats ended the period with 11 shots and five corners.
Villanova came into the second with a sense of urgency, but Rider was ready for the press as the kept the ball in Villanova territory to start the second half. With Rider keeping on the attack, Villanova wasn't able to control the ball as the Broncs netted a goal. Twenty seconds later it was Francesca Bello who came up with a clutch second half goal for the Wildcats to tie the game at two. For their third straight game, the Wildcats would send the game into overtime.
In overtime, Villanova dominated possession as Emma McLaughlin got multiple looks at the goal but couldn't see her shot go through. In the closing minutes of the first overtime period, McLaughlin and Sayia would find teammate Vermeil to capture the victory on Senior Day for the Wildcats.
Villanova Field Hockey will conclude their 2017 regular season on the road at Georgetown on Friday Oct. 27. The match is set for 2 p.m.
