PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior back Maddy Harding scored, but the Villanova field hockey team (3-10, 0-5 BIG EAST) was unable to complete a comeback as it fell to Providence (6-7, 2-3 BIG EAST), 2-1, Saturday afternoon.
The Friars got ahead early with a deflected goal just 3:15 into the game. They added to their lead at 26:15 with a tip-in goal into the right side of the cage.
Villanova goalkeeper Alex Diekmann kept the Wildcats in the game as the Friars pushed offensively. The senior made nine saves in the game, including seven in the first half. In the second half, the Wildcats stepped up defensively. The Friars managed just four shots in the second compared with 10 in the first.
Providence led in shots, 14-4, and corners, 6-4. Villanova had just one shot and one penalty corner in the first half before recording three of each in the second.
Harding now leads the Wildcats in goals (6) and is tied for the lead in points (15) with Swoboda.
The Wildcats have just over a week before they play their final home game against No. 17 Louisville on Sunday, Oct. 27 at noon.
