VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova snapped a five-game losing skid in fine fashion with a 2-1 upset of No. 20 Louisville on Saturday afternoon at Villanova Stadium.
Junior Olivia Maggitti scored the Wildcats' (6-9, 2-2 BIG EAST) two goals in the game. Her first came in the first half at 14:08 unassisted and the second goal game in the second half at 52:56 with an assist from freshman Lauren Wilson.
Senior goalkeeper Megan Goelzallowed just one goal and had five saves in the game- two in the first half and three in the second half. She helped ward off the Cardinals (8-6, 2-3 BIG EAST) who made a late scoring run with less than a minute remaining in the game.
Maggitti's first goal came from a penalty corner and was scored off a rebound. Freshman Jessica Swobodainserted the ball and Maggitti notched the goal at 14:08. The second goal came after Swoboda inserted the ball on a penalty corner with Wilson giving the assist to Maggitti.
Louisville was scoreless until Amber Thomas scored with just 52 seconds remaining in the game. Her goal came unassisted after Mallory Mason inserted the ball on a penalty corner.
Louisville took 20 shots, while holding Villanova to 11, but the Wildcats had seven shots-on-goal and held the Cardinals to six. Swoboda accounted for four shots-on-goal, Maggitti's two turned into two goals scored and freshman Leah Hightook on shot-on-goal.
Louisville goalkeeper Erin Conrad also had five saves in the game.
It was the Cardinals on top in penalty corners with 15 total, while the Wildcats took just three.
Villanova will travel to Georgetown for conference action on Friday, Oct. 21. The game will begin at 3:00 p.m. and will be played at American University in Washington, D.C.
