VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Wildcats (6-9, 1-3 BIG EAST) suffered a conference loss to Providence (7-6, 2-2 BIG EAST) Saturday afternoon at Villanova Stadium. Caitlin Malone's score would serve as the lone goal of the 1-0 defeat to the Friars.
Villanova held back Providence throughout the entire first half, limiting the Friars to seven shots on goal and five scoreless penalty corners. The Wildcats also registered seven shots on goal and had four penalty corner opportunities in the first half. The two teams would end the half scoreless.
Providence found an opening within the first five minutes of the second period when junior forward Caitlin Malone scored her eighth goal of the season with an assist from Emma Mackie. The score would go on to be the game-winner as the Friars would take the 1-0 conference victory when the final horn blew.
Wildcat goalkeeper Alex Diekmann (Holmdel, N.J.) notched three saves on the game while Providence keeper Kathi Weidman registered four saves. Villanova outshot Providence 11-8 and had a 10-6 advantage in corner opportunities.
Villanova is now 10-19-2 all-time against the Friars.
The Wildcats will take to the road against conference foe Louisville and at Indiana next weekend.
