SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Sophomore forward Jenn Nazarethian was the lone scorer for Villanova this afternoon as she netted two goals for the Wildcats in a 4-2 loss to BIG EAST opponent Syracuse at Coyne Field. Syracuse, recently ranked No. 20, managed to snap Villanova's seven-game winning streak, improving the Orange to 11-3, 3-1 BIG EAST, while the Wildcats fall to 9-3, 2-1 BIG EAST.
Villanova and Syracuse played evenly throughout a majority of the game as both teams registered 19 shots with the Orange holding a slight 12-9 advantage in penalty corners. However, it was Syracuse who was able to make the most of their scoring opportunities while also keeping the dangerous Villanova offense in check.
Nazarethian opened up the scoring for the game in the 25th minute of play as she redirected a long pass from senior captain Catherine Somits at the top of the circle to give Villanova a 1-0 lead. Over the next 15 minutes, both teams battled to put points on the board, but it was Syracuse who scored three consecutive goals over a seven-minute span to tie the game and jump ahead of the Wildcats 3-1.
Despite being behind by two goals, Villanova continued to apply heavy pressure to the Orange defense. As a loose ball was hanging in front of the cage, Nazarethian was able to gain possession and slip the ball past Syracuse goalkeeper Heather Hess in the 47th minute of play to score her second goal of the game and bring the Wildcats to within one.
With time winding down, Villanova scrambled and made every attempt to put at least one more goal on the scoreboard. However, Syracuse's Maggie Befort scored an insurance goal with just over three minutes left in the game to once again extend their lead and make the final score 4-2.
After spending a large part of the season on the road, Villanova will host a string of home games starting this Wednesday, October 10, when they take on the Georgetown Hoyas at 4 p.m.
