WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The No. 16 Villanova field hockey team (11-2, 2-0 Big East) shutout the Monmouth Hawks, 5-0, Wednesday afternoon at Monmouth University Field Hockey Park. The `Cats posted five different goal scorers as well as their third shutout of the 2005 season.

Less than two minutes into the game, the Wildcats struck when Sara Schmidt (Mullica Hill, N.J./Wilmington Friends) took a pass from Allison Boris (Shavertown, Pa./Lake Lehman) on the left side of the field to make the score 1-0. Boris continued her scoring at 28:37 when she received the ball from Megan Foster (Berlin, N.J./Bishop Eustace) at midfield and dribbled through three defenders to fire it past Hawk keeper, Carrie Colbert.

Rory Rogers (Rosemont, Pa./Sacred Heart Academy) then started where she left off last week after winning Big East Offensive Player of the Week for her work against Penn, La Salle and Princeton. Rogers saw Lauren Campanelli's (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) shot and rerouted it in to score the goal. The duo traded positions seven minutes before the end of the half as Rogers fired the ball, and Campanelli recovered it to make the score 4-0 going into halftime.

The second half was quiet for both teams as `Nova continued to pressure and Monmouth held the potent offense off. The score remained 4-0 until two minutes left in the game off of a penalty corner. Campanelli took the ball on the line and passed it to stopper, Schmidt, who passed to Foster. The junior scoring leader smashed a shot into the goal to make the final 5-0.

Erin Scott (Malvern, Pa./West Chester East) registered the win for the Wildcats with two saves for the day. Colbert took the loss with seven saves. The Wildcats had a huge advantage in shots and penalty corners with 24 and twelve to the Hawks' four and six.

Villanova takes on a Big East opponent on Saturday in Syracuse at 3 p.m. The Orange are 5-6 for the season, while the Wildcats currently sit atop the conference.
