PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Villanova field hockey team (6-3, 1-1 BIG EAST) fell to BIG EAST Conference rival No. 19 Providence College (4-6, 1-2 BIG EAST) 4-2 on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Providence, R.I. Sophomore keeper Megan Goelz recorded a season-high 17 saves while junior Meg Ryan netted two goals for the Wildcats.

The first half began as an even battle as both teams fought for possession of the ball early on. Gaining the initial lead, PC's Nellie Poulin scored off a rebound shot in the 25th minute to put the scoreboard 1-0 in favor of the Friars.

Just 3 minutes later, Villanova came back to score off a crossing pass when junior Meredith Sabatini connected with fellow classmate Meg Ryan to even the score, 1-1.

At the end of the first half, Providence scored their second goal off a penalty corner when Adrienne Marois capatialized off a pass from Jaime Lipski.

To begin the second stanza, VU's Meg Ryan scored her second goal of the game at the 48th minute mark off an assist from fellow classmate Lauren Wuzzardo. The deflection off of the left post marked the equalizer for the Wildcats at 2-2.

PC clinched the go-ahead goal in the 51st minute when Adrienne Marois took a shot from the right side of the circle which snuck past the Villanova defense. To solidify the win, Nellie Poulin scored an insurance goal for the Friars with four minutes left to play to make the final 4-2.

The Friars outshot the Wildcats 32-5 and also had the advantage in corners by a 19-3 margin. Providence's Rachel Chamberlain had 1 save in the win.


 

 

Villanova is back in action on October 7th when they take on Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
