HAMDEN, Conn.-- Villanova Field Hockey (3-7) traveled to Hamden, Conn. to take on the Quinnipiac Bobcats (3-8) in a BIG EAST afternoon match-up on Friday. The squad earned their first road win and BIG EAST win, 2-1.
The defense got off to quick start as the Quinnipiac offense held their press. They earned the first penalty corner of the day, but a save my Erika Miller kept the game under control. As the Wildcats offense gained momentum, Christen Penning and Emily Cliggett were able to find Abby Siana in the sixth minute to put Villanova up 1-0 early. The Bobcats were able to net a goal in the 27th minute of play, but the squad was able to respond quickly with a goal from Lydia Sydnor. The Wildcats ended the first half with 10 shots and five corners.
With the second half underway, Villanova got to work with an early shot from Riley Dolan but it was blocked by the Bobcats defense. The Villanova defense remained in full force as Quinnipiac looked for the equalizer going into the half mark of the half. Quinnipiac played with urgency for the remainder of the half but the Wildcats were able to tame the attack as they edged Quinnipiac, 2-1. Erika Miller also came up big many times in the second half as she ended the match with 11 saves.
“I’m really happy for our team on such a great win. Quinnipiac is a strong team and our team responded with capitalizing on opportunities. Erika Miller had a fantastic game in goal,” said Villanova field hockey head coach Joanie Milhous.
No. 1 UConn comes to town Friday, Oct. 6 for youth night. There will be more info on youth night in the days to come. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
