Second Half Scoring Lifts Wildcats Over Explorers
Sept. 29, 2007
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - After being shut out in the opening 35 minutes of play, Villanova scored four unanswered goals to secure a 4-1 victory over La Salle and extend their winning streak to six games. Junior Allison Boris and freshman Lauren Wuzzardo each posted two goals for the Wildcats, improving Villanova's overall record to 8-2 for the season.
The Wildcats fell behind in the first five minutes of the game as La Salle's Colleen Lechner deflected a shot past Villanova goalkeeper Maura McCormick to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. In an attempt to even the score, Villanova managed to fire off six shots and force four penalty corners during the first half. However, strong defensive plays by the Explorers left the Wildcats empty handed.
As the second half began, momentum quickly shifted in favor of Villanova as Boris collected a pass from senior Stephanie Campbell to knot the game at 1-1. Five minutes later, Boris scored what would eventually be the game-winning goal off a pass from senior Catherine Somits to give Villanova a 2-1 edge.
Villanova continued to generate offensive scoring opportunities as they registered eight shots in the second half while receiving four more penalty corners. Their efforts paid off as Wuzzardo notched back-to-back insurance goals in the 56th and 60th minutes of play to seal a 4-1 victory over the Explorers.
The Wildcats remain on the road next week as they face the University of Pennsylvania Quakers on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 7:15 p.m. at Franklin Field
