Villanova, Pa. - The Wildcats (8-1) recoded their fourth straight win by defeating Penn (1-7) by a score of 2-1 Wednesday night. Villanova had goals from sophomore Meg Ryan (Wayne, Pa.) and freshman Abby Sordoni (Shavertown, Pa.) to give them their eighth win of the season.
Although the Wildcats out shot the Quaker 13-2 in the first half, Penn was able to get on the board first. Their leading scorer Margaretha Ehret tallied a goal at 7:03 on a shot from the front of the cage.
Villanova answered in the 20th minute with a goal from Sordoni, her fourth of the year. Sophomore Lauren Wuzzardo (Bridgeton, N.J.) assisted on the play and Sordoni fired in a shot from about 10 yards out to end the half in a tie.
The Wildcats came out strong in the second half putting pressure on the Penn defense. They were able to go ahead for good on the goal by Ryan in the 56th minute. Freshman Michelle Arfuso (Medford, N.J.) was able to control a rebounded shot and pass the ball to Ryan for the goal.
Sophomore goalie Maura McCormick (Forty Fort, Pa.) had one save on the night while only allowing one goal. She and the Wildcat defense have only let up six goals in their nine games for a goals against average of 0.67.
Penn goalie Alanna Butera recorded eight saves on the 18 shots by Villanova in the game.
Villanova is now 11-12-2 against the Quakers all time and the Wildcats have won the past three meetings.
Next up for the Wildcats is Lehigh who they will take on September 28th at 1 pm at Villanova Stadium.
