Sept. 23, 2005

Box Score

PISCATAWAY, NJ (September 23, 2005) - Megan Foster (Berlin, N.J/Bishop Eustace) scored two goals to lead the No. 17 Villanova Wildcats to a 5-2 victory over the Rutgers University field hockey team on Friday evening.

The Wildcats opened the scoring in the 14th minute of the first half when Sara Schmidt (Mullica Hill, N.J./Wilmington Friends) scored an unassisted goal to give Villanova the early advantage. Villanova went on to score three more goals, two by Foster and one by Stephanie Campbell (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional), to make the Wildcat advantage 4-0 at the 42nd minute of the second half.

Rutgers continued to pressure Villanova, and in the 53rd minute, Catherine Badolato scored her third goal of the year off of a pass from freshman midfielder Amy Lewis.

Senior Rory Rogers (Rosemont, Pa./Sacred Heart Academy) made it 5-1, the Scarlet Knights, behind sophomore midfielder Jocelyn Mattina, rallied and put the final goal past Wildcat goalie Alex Whalen. Mattina directed a pass off of a corner to Badolato, who was denied by Whalen; however, Mattina was along the right side of the net to knock home the rebound. Whalen played all seventy minutes in the net for the Wildcats marking her first win of the season and tallying two saves.

Villanova out-shot the Scarlet Knights, 19-11, and both teams tallied seven penalty corners each.

With the win, Villanova moves to 8-1 on the season, including 2-0 on top of the BIG EAST. The Wildcats have now won five straight games.

VU field hockey returns to action on Wednesday when it heads into Philadelphia to square off against the Quakers of Pennsylvania at 7:15 p.m.
