Villanova Posts 4-0 Shutout Victory Over Penn

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova field hockey team (2-4, 0-1 BIG EAST) posted a decisive 4-0 win over the Penn Quakers (1-4, 0-1 Ivy League) Wednesday evening. Seniors Lauren Wuzzardo (Bridgetown, N.J./Cumberland Regional) and Meredith Sabatini (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) each provided a goal and an assist to lead the Wildcats for the night.
It took just 10 minutes into the game for Villanova to warm up when senior Dana Ramsden (Woolwich Township, N.J./Kingsway Regional) netted the first score of the contest off a Wuzzardo assist on a penalty corner. The Wildcats took the lead at 1-0, which would be the only score of the period going into halftime.
At the midway point, the Wildcats held an 8-5 advantage in corners and a 12-5 lead in shots.
To begin the second stanza, Sabatini capitalized at the 44 minute mark when she dribbled the ball straight into the circle and rifled a shot to the far post, defeating Penn goalkeeper Kieran Sweeney .The Sabatini goal was the 22nd of her career and gave VU the 2-0 advantage with 26 minutes remaining on the clock.
Just over a minute later at the 45:28 tick, sophomore Moriah Allen (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) took a shot on cage when Wuzzardo picked up the deflection at the back post to put the `Cats ahead, 3-0.
The final tally of the day was posted by senior Sam Haas (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) with the assist credited to Sabatini.
The Wildcats held a decisive 21-7 advantage in shots and a 15-10 lead in penalty corners throughout the match, while junior keeper Megan Goelz (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) had to make just one save in the shutout victory. Penn's Sweeney posted eight saves in the defeat.
Villanova will return to BIG EAST action on Friday, Sept. 24th when they travel to Piscataway, N.J. to face Rutgers. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
