VILLANOVA, Pa. - Courtney Devine scored for the Wildcats, but the Villanova field hockey team (2-5) fell, 4-1, to No. 14 Temple (5-2) Friday evening at Villanova Stadium.
Temple scored early, with back Rachel Steinman sending in a goal at 3:54. Tricia Light added another for the Owls to send them into the locker rooms at halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Temple forward Amber Youtz, who leads the team with 25 points, scored twice in the second half and added an assist on Steinman's goal.
Devine's goal broke the shutout at 64:22 in the second half. Sophomore midfielder Kayla Kenney hit a shot toward the goal, and Devine collected the rebound and sent it past Temple goalkeeper Lizzy Millen. It was Devine's second goal of the season.
Villanova stepped up offensively in the second half. The Wildcats recorded 10 shots in the second half compared with three in the first. Junior forward Leah High and Kenney had shots turned away at the goal line by Millen.
Temple led the game in offensive chances, shooting 22 shots to Villanova's 13. The Owls also had an 18-11 advantage in penalty corners.
Senior goalkeeper Alex Diekmann made nine saves in the game, including two after the Owl's took seven consecutive penalty corners in the first.
The Wildcats travel to No. 3 Connecticut and UMass-Lowell next weekend.
