Wildcats Upset No. 17 Rutgers 3-1

Piscataway, N.J. - The Wildcats (7-1) defeated No. 17 Rutgers (6-1) by a score of 3-1 Friday night in their first BIG EAST contest of the season. Freshman Abby Sordoni (Shavertown, Pa.), sophomore Dana Ramsden (Woolwich Twp., N.J.) and junior Emily Donaldson (Glassboro, N.J.) each had a goal in the second half to give the Wildcats the come from behind win.
Rutgers struck first when leading scorer Amy Lewis put the Scarlet Knights on the board with a goal in the 7th minute. Rutgers remained in control throughout the half, taking seven shots while holding Villanova to one. A defensive save by Senior Sam Coveleski (Lewes, Del.) kept the WIldcats from trailing by two at the half. Coveleski was able to stop a shot by Rutgers' Katie Feeley in the 32nd minute.
Villanova started off the second half strong with a goal at 41:27 by Sordoni. With a loose ball in front of the goal, Sordoni was able to connect and tie the game with her third goal of the season.
In the 54th minute, the Wildcats struck again on a penalty shot by Ramsden to claim the lead. Ramsden is an offensive force for the Villanova as she leads the team with seven goals this season.
Villanova sealed the win with less than two minutes remaining on a goal by Donaldson. Ramsden recorded an assist on the play as Donaldson was able to connect on a deflection on the left side of the cage.
Sophomore Goalkeeper Maura McCormick (Forty Fort, Pa.) continued to impress as she recorded eight saves in the game. This brings her season total to 36 and her goals against average to 0.81. McCormick and the Wildcat defense have held their opponents to five goals and 64 shots in eight games, while Villanova has scored 18 goals and taken 104 shots.
This game marked the 27th match up of the two teams in which Villanova now leads 15-12-1. The Wildcats have won the past eight meetings.
