Villanova, Pa. - In rainy and windy conditions in a game held at nearby West Chester University, the Villanova University (2-2) field hockey team dropped a 7-0 decision to #2 UNC (5-0). The Wildcats suffered their second loss of the season in the first game of the annual Vonnie Gros Classic.
The Tar Heels, the #2 ranked team in the nation, showed their dominance by scoring 4 goals in the first half and ended the second stanza with another three. 2008 Olympian and senior Katelyn Falgowski led UNC with two goals and two assists en route to a six point performance; one goal coming off a penalty stroke.
UNC scores and assists came from J. Gaudioso Radvany, Riley Foster, Melanie Brill and Falgowski.
Villanova goalkeeper and junior Maura McCormick (Forty Fort, Pa.) recorded a season high seven saves during her 45 minutes in goal and faced 25 shots. Sophomore Megan Goelz (Yardley, Pa.) added another 2 saves to her season statistics as well, coming up with a crucial block of a hard hit from UNC forward Danielle Forword in the last minutes of the second half.
The Wildcats will look for revenge as they play their second and final game of the Vonnie Gros Classic on Saturday, September 12th at 7:30pm vs. Appalachian State (2-2). The game will be held at Vonnie Gros field on the campus of West Chester University.
