PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Villanova junior Allison Boris scored her first goal of the 2007 season to lift the Wildcats (2-1) over the Drexel Dragons (2-2) in overtime tonight in Philadelphia, Pa. After scoreless play in regulation, senior Stephanie Campbell took a straight shot from just outside the Wildcat offensive circle, where Boris was positioned at the stroke mark for the deflection past Drexel goalkeeper Colleen McAndrew.

The Wildcats came out strong from the initial whistle, as they clearly kept the ball in their offensive end for most of the first half. Although the `Cats fired off nine shots in the first 35 minutes of play, the Dragons' stingy defense spoiled Villanova's many scoring opportunities. Drexel mounted their own offensive several times, but were halted by the efforts of Villanova goalkeeper Maura McCormick, who made back-to-back diving saves to keep the Dragons off the scoreboard.

The second half proved to be much of the same for both teams. The Wildcats continued to apply heavy pressure on the Dragons, but could not seem to connect for a goal once inside their own scoring circle. Drexel also gained some momentum to force three consecutive penalty corners in hopes of scoring the first goal of the game. However, Villanova's stubborn defense thwarted all attempts made by the Dragons.

With the clock winding down in the second half, it seemed as though Villanova might notch a late goal to secure a victory on the road. At one point, Boris broke free behind the Drexel defense, where she defeated goalkeeper McAndrew, but could not finish out the play to put the Wildcats ahead. In the remaining five minutes of regulation, Villanova also fired off a flurry shots, which proved unsuccessful due to the Dragon defense clogging the Wildcats circle.

Villanova entered overtime right where they left off in regulation. The Wildcats drove down field in the first three minutes, where Campbell released a powerful shot from about the 25 yard line. The ball found its way to an unmarked Boris positioned right on the stroke mark to redirect the shot past Drexel's McAndrew for the win.

The Wildcats return to action this weekend when they compete in the Vonnie Gros Tournament held at West Chester University. Villanova will face North Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 2:30 p.m. and Monmouth on Sunday, Sept. 9 at noon.
