VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova field hockey team narrowly lost its season opener, 1-2, against Sacred Heart Saturday.
Junior forward Jessica Swoboda started scoring in the game, tipping a shot into the lower left net at 16:13 in the first period. The goal was assisted by senior midfielder Keira Zambon and junior back Maddy Harding. This was Harding's first game back after missing the 2012 season with an injury. The Wildcats (0-1) went into the half with a 1-0 lead.
Sacred Heart forward Christine Mace knotted up the game with a shot off a rebound at 57:24 in the second period. The Pioneers (2-0) broke the tie with a tip-in goal from Stephanie Frye at 66:17.
Zambon was a stalwart on defense, breaking up passes and opportunities on numerous occasions. Swoboda led the team offensively, recording three shots and two shots-on-goal in addition to her goal. Junior midfielder Lauren Wilson peppered five shots and three shots-on-goal at Pioneer goalkeeper Mary Altepeter, but none made it into the net.
Villanova led both teams in shots with 12 for the game. The team also had a 9-6 advantage in corners.
The Wildcats will look to rebound Sunday as they take on No. 1 North Carolina tomorrow at noon in Newark, Del.
