Villanova Women's Crew at IRA Championships

VILLANOVA, Pa. -The Villanova Women's Crew team is currently participating in the 1998 Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta this Thursday thru Saturday, May 28-30, on the Cooper River in Camden, NJ. The Regatta; which is the oldest in college rowing history, is the national championship for all of women's lightweight crew.

Today (May 29) Villanova's lightweight eight qualified for the finals which will be held tomorrow (May 30). The Wildcat's finished a mere 1.1 seconds behind the first place qualifier Princeton's lightweight eight. Villanova women's heavyweight eight qualified for the semi's, but did not advance to the finals.

The Villanova Women's Crew team will travel to the prestigious Henley Women's Regatta, held in London, England, on Saturday, June 20 and Sunday, June 21, 1998. The Henley Regatta was first held in 1839 and has been held annually ever since, except during the two World Wars. The Regatta began as a one day event, extended to two days by 1840, to three days in 1886 and to four in 1906. In 1986 the Regatta was extended to five days. Qualifying races are now held in the week before the Regatta to reduce the number of entries to the permitted maximum.
