PHILADELPHIA, PA - On Saturday, May 12, the Villanova University women's rowing team arrived on the Schuylkill River, looking to create another storybook ending at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta. The Wildcats entered the 2001 competition having won the women's and overall points trophies at the Dad Vail Regatta in three of the last four years. Villanova won three consecutive Dad Vail titles between 1997 and 1999, before its streak was broken in 2000 when the Wildcats finished second in both the women's and overall points standings. Villanova was unable to vault itself back to the top of the Dad Vail competition on this day, however, as the `Cats finished the 2001 Regatta in second place in both the overall and women's points trophy standings.
Winning the overall points trophy at the 2001 Dad Vail Regatta was Purdue, who finished first with 43 points. Villanova finished in second position behind Purdue with a total of 28 points. The Wildcats also placed second overall in the women's points trophy standings with 18 points, six points behind first place Delaware (24).
Early in the day on Saturday, in the finals of the women's freshman/novice lightweight eight, Villanova continued its annual Dad Vail excellence. The Wildcats grabbed an early lead and coasted to victory earning the gold medal with a first place time of 7:33.0.
Villanova was unable to keep its streak in the varsity heavyweight eight alive. The Wildcats, who had won the event for two straight years, placed third (7:14.4) behind first place Boston College and second place Rochester.
