Women's Crew Wins Five at Bergen Cup

May 7, 1998

After an outstanding performance at the Big East Invitational on April 26, the Villanova women's crew team kept up their hot streak with another superb meet in the Bergen Cup on Saturday, May 2, at the Schuykill River in Philadelphia, Pa. The Wildcats won five races on Saturday, in their last race before the famed Dad Vail Regatta on May 9-10.

The Cats first victory came in the women's novice four, where Villanova defeated crosstown rival LaSalle. In the women's novice eight-B, the Wildcats defeated the Hawks of St. Joseph's by a lengthy 20-second margin. Villanova's third victory of the afternoon came in the women's junior varsity eight event. The Wildcat JV Eight's (6:58) defeated a five team field, which included the likes of Temple (7:09), St. Joseph's (7:12), Drexel (7:13.02) and LaSalle (7:13.9).

The Villanova varsity squads, like the novice and JV crews, were also a force at the Bergen Cup. The Wildcat varsity lightweight eight's posted a time of 6:51, defeating St. Joseph's by ten seconds. The lightweight victory was just another memorable highlight in a season which has them ranked third in the nation by the Independent Rowing New, behind just Radcliffe and Princeton. The Cats last victory at the Schuykill came in the women's varsity eight event. Villanova topped their four Philadelphia opponents finishing in 6:45, seven seconds ahead of second place Temple (6:52).

The Villanova women's crew team will resume their schedule on May 9-10, when they head to the Schuykill in Philadelphia, Pa., for the Dad Vail Regatta.
