Women's Rowing Competes in Villanova Lightweight Invitational

Villanova, PA - On Sunday, April 1, one day removed from the third annual Knecht Cup, the Villanova women's rowing team was back in action in the Villanova Lightweight Eight Invitational. Five colleges participated in the event including Massachusetts, Radcliffe, Wisconsin, Central Florida, and Villanova. The finish of the boats in yesterday's Knecht Cup Lightweight Eight final seeded the race. The top returning boat was Wisconsin, followed by Radcliffe, Villanova, Central Florida, and Massachusetts. Wisconsin used their number one seed and preferred lane three to row to the victory with a time of 7:20.70. Radcliffe finished second in the race, crossing the line with a time of 7:46.6. Massachusetts was third, 7:49.3, Villanova was fourth, 8:02, and Central Florida was fifth, 8:09.4. In the second half of the Invitational, Villanova squared off in a dual meet with Massachusetts. The meet was scheduled for six events, the Varsity Four, Frosh/Novice Four, Second Frosh/Novice Eight, Frosh/Novice Eight, Second Varsity Eight, and Varsity Eight. Villanova emerged victorious in four of the six events. The first race was the Varsity Four, which the Wildcats won by eight seconds with a time of 8:39.3. Massachusetts crossed the line at 8:47.5. In the second event, Villanova entered an 'A' and 'B' boat. The Villanova 'A' boat rowed to the victory by crushing the closest competitor, Central Florida, by 16 seconds. Villanova 'A' finished with a time of 9:19.3, Central Florida finished in second, 9:35.1, Villanova 'B crossed in third, 9:43.3, and Massachusetts finished fourth with a mark of 9:44.1. In the Second Frosh/Novice Eight the Wildcats continued to dominate, rowing past Massachusetts and Georgetown. Villanova crossed the line in first after posting a time of 8:16.5, eight seconds ahead of Georgetown and 42 seconds ahead of Massachusetts. Villanova's final victory on the afternoon came in the Varsity Eight, where they defeated Massachusetts for the fourth time by rowing a time of 7:51.5. The time was 15 seconds better than Massachusetts' time of 8:05.97. |
