42 Collegiate Teams Compete in 2001 Knecht Cup

Camden, NJ - On Saturday, March 31, Villanova University hosted the 2001 Knecht Cup on Camden, New Jersey's Cooper River Course. 43 different collegiate teams participated in the rowing event, including local college's Villanova, St. Joseph's, Temple, and La Salle. Combined the four Philadelphia area schools won eight events, with both Villanova and Temple taking first three times, and St. Joseph's crossing in first twice. Other collegiate teams that performed well included Navy, three victories, and Princeton, three victories.
Villanova rowed well all day both on the men and women's side. The Wildcat men got things started early as the Men's Club Four stroked to a 16-second victory over second place finisher Manhattan with a time of 7:19.35. The men got their second victory of the day in the Lightweight Eight as they cruised past Boston College in a time of 6:24.86. The Villanova men also finished third in the Varsity Eight with a time of 6:22.71. On the women's side, Villanova Varsity Four was phenomenal, rowing to a second place finish. The Lady 'Cats finished just six seconds behind the winner after posting a time of 8:11.26. Other Villanova women's boats that placed well, included Frosh/Novice Lightweight Eight, second place (7:49.45), Frosh/Novice eight, fourth place (7:38.96), Second Frosh/Novice Eight, second place (7:47.58), and the Second Varsity Eight, fifth place (7:43.01).
For Temple on the day, they were victorious in the men's Varsity Eight, Varsity Four, and the Second Varsity Eight. The Owls placed two boats in the top three in the varsity four. Their 'A' boat crossed in a time of 6:41.64 to claim first and their 'B' boat finished with a time of 7:02.78 to place third. In the Varsity eight, Temple finished first by 11 seconds, defeating Dowling, Villanova, St. Joseph's, Boston College, and Skidmore with a time of 6:02.53. In the Second Varsity Eight the Owls defeated city rival St. Joe's by five seconds after posting a time of 6:31.76.
St. Joe's also performed well on the day getting victories in two events, finishing second once, fourth in two events, and fifth once. The two victories came in the men's Frosh/Novice Eight, and Second Frosh/Novice Eight. In the Frosh/Novice Eight the Hawks rowed a time of 6:31.6 to cruise past Army, Rhode Island, Bucknell, Lehigh, and Boston College. In the Second Frosh/Novice Eight, St. Joe's defeated Army, city rival La Salle and Rhode Island by posting a time of 6:55. The Hawk women placed fourth in the Second Varsity Eight and fifth in the Lightweight Eight, while the men's other finish was fourth in the Varsity Eight.
La Salle also made a name for themselves by placing in six different events. Their best finish came in the men's varsity pair where they placed second after rowing a time of 7:56.63. Their time of 8:10.7 placed them third in the women's Varsity Quad, while the men also placed third in the Second Frosh/Novice Eight. The men posted a time of 7:10.19. The Explorers finished fourth in the men's Varsity Four, fifth in the women's Frosh/Novice Four, and sixth in the women's Varsity Four.
Navy and Princeton dominated the women's events with each crew taking home three victories. For Navy they captured victories in the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, and Second Frosh/Novice Eight. The Midshipmen narrowly defeated Boston College in the Varsity Eight by crossing the line in a time of 6:59.00. Princeton left the day of rowing with wins in the Lightweight Eight, Lightweight Four, and Frosh/Novice Lightweight Eight. In the Lightweight Eight the Tigers won by four seconds over Wisconsin, rowing a time of 7:05. In the Lightweight Four, Princeton won by ten seconds with a time of 8:13.29. |
