Post-Game Quotes

Villanova head coach Harry Perretta...

On the tempo of the game:

"In the first half of the game we were able to control the tempo. When we can control the tempo of a game we are pretty good. Connecticut did the right thing; they began to press us and they kept doing it to force us into playing fast."

On the Connecticut press:

"When they pressed us we had a decision to make. We could attack the press and take the first open shot, or we could attack the press and then throw the ball out. At the end of the first half we were able to attack and then throw the ball out, but in the second half when you fall behind it is hard to do that and you are forced to play."

"When you get into a situation where you are forced to play from behind, it becomes a talent game, and we can't win a talent game against them."

On Lisa Karcic:

"Lisa played like she is capable of in the first half, but not the second half. She is a freshman and is still learning. She has talent and she gives us something that we don't have a lot of because she is big and athletic, and can do a lot of things. She is like Kate Dessart Mager but is stronger and can defend at the other end of the floor."

On Connecticut's lineup:

"They played small and mobile tonight with Ann Strother at power forward. I think that is what they have to do the rest of the year to be successful, even against elite teams. What they are doing is putting a very skilled player at a spot where you usually have someone bigger. We have trouble defending that skilled a player at that spot. Stacie Witman did the best job of defending [Strother] tonight, but she is just a sophomore and doesn't score a lot at the other end."

Villanova senior guard Betsy McManus...

On the game:

"We were excited about the first half that we played but it was just one half. We haven't been able to put a whole game together yet, and Connecticut just turned it on in the second half."

On the Villanova defense:

"If we do what we did in the first half today for 40 minutes, we will be okay. We can defend people. If we can defend against Connecticut the way we did for a while tonight, we can defend pretty well against a lot of people."
