Wildcats Ready for Florida International Thanksgiving Classic

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova will travel to Miami for the Thanksgiving holiday to compete in the Florida International Thanksgiving Classic. The 5-0 Wildcats will play Montana State in the first round on Friday, Nov. 29, at 8 p.m. Host FIU will take on Valparaiso in the other first round match-up.

The Wildcats are off to a 5-0 start for the first time since 2002-03. That 2002-03 team began the year 6-0 and ended the season with a 28-6 overall record, the Big East Tournament championship and a berth in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

Villanova will be making its third all-time appearance in the Florida International Thanksgiving Classic. The Wildcats are 3-1 all-time in the tournament. Villanova won the FIU Thanksgiving Classic in 2001 with a 52-50 win over the host Panthers in the first round and a 70-46 victory against Georgia State in the championship. In 2006, Villanova went 1-1 in the tournament. The Wildcats lost to Tulane in the first round (72-60) and defeated North Florida in the consolation game by a score of 66-47.

In the history of the program, the Villanova women's basketball team has registered an 81-36 (.692) all-time record when playing in-season tournaments. The Wildcats have won seven of the last 10 in-season tournaments they have participated in, including the Toledo Tip-off Tournament earlier this month.

Villanova is led in scoring by junior center Emily Leer who is averaging 12.4 points per game. The Wildcats have three other players averaging double figures in points including senior guard Devon Kane (11. ppg.) along with junior forward Lauren Burford (10.0 ppg.) and sophomore guard Caroline Coyer (10.0 ppg.). Sophomore forward Kavunaa Edwards leads the team in rebounds at 8.4 per game.
