VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova travels west for the Thanksgiving holiday to participate in the UNLV Lady Rebel Round-Up. The Wildcats will open the tournament on Saturday, Nov. 24, against Bowling Green. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. pacific time. The other first round game will feature the host Rebels against Montana.
The Wildcats have had limited history against all three teams in the tournament field. Villanova is 0-1 against first round opponent Bowling Green, 1-1 versus UNLV and the Wildcats have never played Montana. The only other meeting between Villanova and Bowling Green came in the first round of the Illinois Tournament on Dec. 2, 1988. In that game, the Falcons tallied a 72-55 win.
This will be Villanova's third appearance in the UNLV Thanksgiving Tournament. The Wildcats are 3-1 all-time playing in a UNLV Tournament. Villanova won the 1993 UNLV Thanksgiving Classic with wins over UNLV (66-57) and Colorado State (67-63). In 2004, the Wildcats lost to North Carolina (63-56) in the first round and defeated Texas Arlington (59-53) in the consolation game.
This weekend's UNLV Lady Rebel Round-Up will be the second of three in-season tournaments for Villanova this year. The Wildcats opened the season in the Minnesota Best Buy Classic where they defeated South Dakota State (71-47) in the first round and lost to Minnesota (75-60) in the championship game. On Dec. 29-30, Villanova will travel to Hanover, New Hampshire, to play in the Dartmouth Tournament. Joining the Wildcats and Dartmouth in the tournament will be Delaware and Duquesne.
Senior forward Laura Sweeney has picked-up where she left off last year. After three games, Sweeney leads Villanova in scoring (16.7 ppg.), rebounding (4.7 rpg.), field goal percentage (.677) and steals (7). Her best effort of the year came in the season opener when she netted 24 points in a win over South Dakota State.
