Oct. 18, 2012

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Big East Conference held its annual women's basketball media day on Thursday, Oct. 18, at the New York Athletic Club. In addition to announcing the pre-season predicted order of finish, the conference also released the preseason All-Conference team and individual player awards.

Villanova was picked to finish 10th with 78 points. Connecticut was the choice to win the regular season championship with 194 points and 12 first place votes.

Senior forward Laura Sweeney was named to the preseason All-Big East Honorable Mention team. As a junior last year, Sweeney earned second team All-Big East honors. In 32 games last season, Sweeney led the Wildcats in scoring (14.4 ppg.), rebounding (7.6 rpg.), field goal percentage (.504), steals (52) and blocks (39).

Notre Dame senior guard Skylar Diggins earned preseason Player of the Year honors, while Connecticut's Breanna Stewart garnered Freshman of the Year accolades.

The Wildcats return four starters and nine letterwinners from last year's team that went 19-15 overall and advanced to the third round of the WNIT.

Villanova begins the 2012-13 season on Nov. 10-11 in the Minnesota Tournament. The Wildcats play South Dakota State in the first round and will play either host Minnesota or Washington State in the second round.
