VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova University senior forward Laura Sweeney (Marlton, N.J/Cherokee High School) has been named the South Jersey College Player of the Year by the Al Carino Basketball Club. Sweeney was presented with the award at a banquet held on Wednesday, March 27, at the Crowne Plaza in Cherry Hill, N.J.
Sweeney helped lead Villanova this past season to a 21-11 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The senior forward led Villanova in five statistical categories, including scoring (14.0 ppg.), rebounding (6.8 rpg.), field goal percentage (.523), steals (72) and blocks (59). She started all 31 games she played in and tallied four 20-point games, 26 double figure scoring efforts and eight double-doubles. For her Wildcat career, Sweeney posted double figure scoring games in 87 of 124 contests. She also had 17 career double-doubles and 15 career 20-point scoring performances.
Her best scoring effort of the 2012-13 season came at Syracuse on March 2, when she tallied a career-high 29 points in a 77-75 triple overtime win. She finished her Wildcat career ranking sixth all-time in program history in scoring with 1,550 points and fifth in rebounding with 802 caroms.
Sweeney wasn't the only Wildcat to be honored at the banquet. Former Villanova standout Lisa Angelotti Gedaka was named the Al Carino Club Coach of the Year after leading Gloucester Catholic High School to a 26-3 record and a trip to the Non Public A South championship game. During her 24 years at Gloucester Catholic, Angelotti Gedaka has tallied a 476-151 record. Angelotti Gedaka played at Villanova from 1984-88 and was the 1988 Big East Player of the Year. She currently ranks fifth all-time at Villanova in scoring with 1,622 points and fourth in rebounding with 854 rebounds.
